Pinot Noir - Chapter I

Sonoma Coast

A gorgeous light cranberry color. It has delicate and inviting aromas of strawberries, roses, gingerbread, Chinese five spice, with cedar and sandalwood-like incense. This Pinot Noir is also intensely perfumed in the mouth, and has great energy, fruit sweetness, and juicy acidity with fine, elegant ripe tannins. Structured but succulent and fruit forward, this wine will drink fantastic young, as well as with 3-8 years of bottle age.

The aromas are almost indescribable, but they are effusive and intoxicating with citrus oil, tarragon, basil, mint, dark wild cherry, ripe strawberries, red roses, grilled meat with a core of earthy minerality. It is bright and vibrant with dark cherry and red plum flavors complemented by savory herb and meaty notes which all lead into a juicy, succulent, and mouthwatering finish that is long, spicy, and complex with an iron-rich finish. This wine has a great future ahead!

significant wine I have ever crafted in my now
38 years of winemaking in the Napa Valley.

Mount Veeder’s rugged volcanic soils force the vines to seek out nutrients and in turn produce tiny berries with intensely concentrated fruit: blackberry, blueberry, currant and spices. Accented by aromas of cocoa, baking spices, and sage which always provide a great freshness.

In the mouth, the wine is rich, full and ample, with multiple layers of dark fruits. The mountain tannins while present are well integrated supporting the wines structure. The overall impression is a wine of great and distinctive personality: a wine that claims its birthplace which is only highlighted with a subtle, highly respectful winemaking style. This wine is made to be enjoyed now yet has the potential of long aging that will only enhance its character and complexity.

From the famed Bacigalupi Vineyard in Sonoma’s Russian River Valley Appellation (same vineyard as Chateau Montelena’s Chardonnay that won the 1976 Judgement of Paris).

Near perfect growing conditions in 2018 created a wine of great complexity. Intense aromas of citrus blossoms, yellow peach and dried apricots. In the mouth, the texture is ample and rich but not without balance.  Approachable now, the wine will reward several years of cellaring and continue to develop for years, much like its Burgundian cousins from Corton-Charlemagne.
