VGS: GOOD THINGS SPEAK FOR THEMSELVES

VGS Cabernet Sauvignon

Mount Veeder, Napa Valley

Wow, wow, wow…!

The 2016 vintage in the Napa Valley will go down in wine history as LEGENDARY…and here’s a perfect example why.

A deep brick red color immediately shines from the glass with a great depth and density.

A concentrated and intense yet restrained subtle nose leads with a hint of fresh and pleasant violets. Next to arrive the fruit, bright red cherries and ripe blackberries with a light touch of cranberry. From there, the bouquet evolves towards attractive spices and savory aromas of: Chinese five spice, fresh sage, dark chocolate covered caramels, roasted coffee beans, freshly cracked black pepper, licorice and chocolate spearmint leaves. Absolutely enticing!

The mouthful is full bodied with medium tannins. The lively and vibrant acidity frames the wine and prevents it from being too massive. The tannins are melted to the point of making it a drinkable wine early however, this wine will evolve and gain tremendously from aging. It’s a keeper! The complexity will develop within the first five years and remain for many years to come. Thanks to the acidity and the overall balance of the wine, the finish long lastiung with layers appearing after layers. The aftertaste is simply delicious.

VGS Syrah

Mount Veeder

You’ve got to love these mountain grapes that deliver such intensity and character to produce blockbuster wine. Extremely extracted, the color is dark. The nose is full and complex with explosive aromas and flavors of blueberries, blackberries, vanilla, cedar, leather and a bit of tobacco. The wine’s weight fills your mouth and sits right there. It is dense and full. It is heavy in its body but does not taste heavy because the flavors and fruits are so powerful, aromatic and exuberant that they bring lightness. Very beautifully balanced, rich, round and intense, it shows great elegance at the same time. If you are lucky enough to be one who gets it, you are very envied!

VGS Zinfandel

Moon Mountain

As a whole 2016 is a beautiful vintage. The wines show power and balance, and this zinfandel is certainly no exception. It has an attractive and rich nose of fully ripe raspberries, blackberries, a little bit of plum and fig which evolves into complex flavors of spices like sage, vanilla, black pepper, and nutmeg.

In the mouth the wine shows great weight with mild tannins. Even though it is fully ripe and loaded it does not make the wine heavy. The real beauty of our Moon Mountain location is that our elevation and cooler climate protects the acidity and makes the structure of the wine balanced with its richness. You will like it! The wine has great length on your palate. The French oak is fully integrated and fully contributes to the expression of the flavors and make it the wine feel full and round with a very long finish.

VGS Petite Sirah

Napa Valley

The dark, inky color may mislead you! Oh yes, the wine is concentrated and dense but it is not as blockbuster and tannic as the color might let you think.

The wine has a very intense and expressive nose, rich, deep, going and going. It is loaded with ripe dark fruits – boysenberry, black cherry and plums – with soft tones of vanilla, cedar and a nice earthiness. It is really a nice, well integrated bouquet.

Body weight and bright acidity immediately attacks the palate and you feel the concentration of flavors. Then you go through layers after layers delivering the ripe black fruits, fresh herbs and spicy black pepper flavors. The finish is long and firm with a strong, lasting tannic structure, ensuring a long life for this often misunderstood wine.

One thing is for certain … this “Petite” definitely is not very “petite.” Only 98 cases made.

Potelle Two

Napa Valley

The practice of establishing a “second wine” began in the 18th century as way for Bordeaux winemakers to be more selective of the wine going into their estate label. The goal was to increase the quality of the “Grand Vin” (i.e. VGS) and also create a very good second wine, which can typically be enjoyed, younger and costs less.

Since then, a lot of the top chateaux have added a third wine. That strict selection between the lots and the barrels, ensure the very best quality for the Grand Vin and a tremendous quality/value for the second vin.

At VGS, we have done that by having the VGS and the Illegitimate. Now, we are adding Potelle Two which makes our selection process even stricter. And The Illegitimate has become a separate brand.

Potelle Two, the second wine of Potelle, was born from this tradition.

53% Cabernet Sauvignon, 16% Petite Sirah, 13% Zinfandel, 9% Syrah, 6% Cabernet Franc and 3% Grenache.

In the mouth the wine has a nice structure, the weight is good, it sits well, it is round and ample but it also presents a nice suppleness that balances the structure and ensure earlier drinkability. The finish is very long.

50/50 Cuveé

Saint Julien, Bordeaux & Mount Veeder, Napa Valley

A completely unique wine, a first of its kind in the wine industry! A delicious red blend composed of 50% Cabernet Sauvignon, 35% Merlot and 15% Petit Verdot.

Having been born and raised in Bordeaux, France but having lived in the Napa Valley for the past 35 years, I wanted to merge these two great wine cultures and create something really unique... a wine from my "two homes".

So, I have partnered with my favorite cousin in Bordeaux to blend a completely appropriate and imaginative wine. I am proud to introduce and offer this one-of-a-kind wine to you!

Aromatically this wine says “I am from Napa” with bright red and black berries, cocoa and spices. Once you take a sip, the Old-World, Classic Bordeaux texture and subtle fruit flavors dominate. We have tasted many Master Sommeliers and winemakers blind on this wine, and each time they are confused, intrigued, perplexed and amazed…we think you will be too!

Sauvignon Blanc

Napa Valley

VGS Chateau Potelle has been making Napa Valley Sauvignon Blanc for a “few” years now and the 2017 certainly does not disappoint. Inspired stylistically by the white wines of Bordeaux (Graves/Pessac-Léognan) this blend of 97% Sauvignon Blanc and 3 % Semillon has great fruit, a rich and luscious body, and bright-refreshing acidity.

The wine leads off with a compelling bouquet of apricot and kiwi, tropical passionfruit and pineapple guava, honeyed lemons and crushed stones with a hint of aromatic lime blossoms and magnolia flowers.

In the mouth, a medium to full-bodied weight envelops your palate. The wine is super intense with plenty of stone fruit and citrusy layers not to mention plenty of crisp zing and persistence. Flavors of papaya, guava, lime peel and Meyer lemons will keep you reaching for another glass. The subtle oak influence adds a rich, toasty complexity to the finish. A real pleasure!

VGS Chardonnay

Napa Valley

The vibrant nose starts by a very fresh, lively and pure perfume of lemons and grapefruit. The 2017 VGS Char-donnay is very focused! Once in the glass, it develops towards apricots, almond paste, brioche and a very light sweet honey. The oak is present but very subdued and not apparent on the initial bouquet, despite the barrel fermen-tation. The acidity carries the elegant bouquet.
In the mouth the fruit really shines. Mandarins, lychee and melon are all present, yet the wine remains very focused due to its core acidity that is going to make this wine long lived. A complex array of spices appear next, candied ginger, star anise and cardamom with plenty of zesty citrus oils. The acidity makes the wine leaner in its’ structure while carrying all the fruit and aromatics and will develop with layer and nuance for years. This wine will be great with Asian food, seafood and shellfish! The finish is very long, elegant, and complex and shows a great energy.

If you like buttery, heavy chardonnay…this wine is not for you.

In the mouth the wine stays lean despite a certain luscious-ness you feel and that will develop with time.
