For years and years rumors have run rampant regarding the true meaning of VGS. Please, let us clarify any misconceptions you might have!

Winepedia defines VGS as: "A wine so pure and true, its virtues exude layers of pleasure to all who drink it". While we at VGS agree with the fictional winepedia about the "pleasure" part, they are still a bit off the mark!

The Wine Observer defines VGS as: "The highest level of wines you will encounter on this or any other planet, truly out of this world…VGS = Virtual Grape Superiority!"

Although we are humbled and honored to be included in the company of Chateau Saturn and Clos Venus, we feel our wines are best enjoyed on "terra firma"!

The Wine Campaigner defines VGS as: "I have tasted all the wines of the world and VGS wines are at the pinnacle of their industry. Quite honestly, in my most un-humble (and subsequently Latin opinion) VGS can only mean one thing, Vitis Grandus Selectus!"

Where do we begin with all this? Let's just say VGS means so much more, and at the same time, so much less.

VGS is an attitude: quality and elegance without pretention.
VGS is a pleasure: to enjoy and to share.

VGS: shhhhh! Don't listen to rumors. Good things speak for themselves.

As you may have heard by now, this year marks 50% of my life spent in France and 50% here in the Napa Valley.

To commemorate this anniversary, I wanted to make something really unique...
a wine from my "two homes".

So, I have partnered with my cousin in Bordeaux, 
to create a completely appropriate and imaginative wine.

The 50/50 Cuvée is a blend of 50% Mt. Veeder, Napa Valley 
(Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot) and 
50% from St. Julien, Bordeaux (Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Malbec).

I am proud to introduce and offer this one-of-a-kind wine to you!

13VGS Cabernet Sauvignon

A Classic Bordeaux inspired wine. Not only in its composition: a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot, but also in its style. It is not the full, super ripe and big Napa style. Instead it is rich, dense and complex … all in nuances. I LOVE It!

The color is a beautiful young, deep and brilliant red. The first nose is vibrant, very rich, complex and multi layers. At this early stage, the bouquet is dominated by the exuberance of the Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. Both provide for raspberry, some pepper perfume, cassis and violets even some nuances of banana. With more air, and with age, the bouquet will become more powerful with stronger flavors of fresh red cherries, eucalyptus, toast and vanilla. I find also some really subtle aromas of cardamom and saffron, sage and bay leaf.

In the mouth…ahhhhhh! The Cabernet Sauvignon definitely conquers the space in its full dimensions and sits nicely on the palate. All the grapes are very well integrated and they complement each other perfectly. The mouthfeel is rich and luscious, full, round and ample yet delicate. Our soil, full of stones, produces smaller berries with more intense flavors and good tannins. The tannins are present but polished, supporting the expansiveness of the wine in its broad structure and very pure flavors.

This wine will develop into one of VGS finest. Enjoy now and then start drinking in 5 years.

The bouquet on this baby is so inviting, layer upon layer of tropical aromas
dominated by fresh pineapples, dried peaches, apricots and zesty fresh lime.
Floral notes of honeysuckle, vanilla and marzipan pull you in.

10VGS Merlot 375ml

Elegance, opulence, style and, dare we say, substance! From high atop Mount Veeder, the grapes from our Wild Cat Vineyard high have put this Merlot in a class by itself. Bright fruits burst forth before even lifting the glass. Blueberry, blackberry and dark black cherry notes saturate the palate, revealing a thick, dense wine with plenty of stuffing and weight. On the palate, the wine is lush with complex flavors of red raspberries, warm cherry pie, dried herbs and cola. Round, supple tannins provide an enticing framework for the flavors and contribute to a lingering finish.

Restrain, elegance, finesse, sexy...this Cabernet Franc is a real mountain beauty! Sourced from our new Wild Cat Vineyard high atop Mount Veeder, it’s intoxicating notes of rose petals and green tea overlay a core of red fruits-strawberry, raspberry, and beach plums. In the mouth, the wine rich without being heavy. It is fresh and lively on the palate, with a “velvet glove” of melted and refined tannins. Dark fruits dominated by black cherries and herbal overtones seduce.

14VGS Zinfandel

As a whole 2014 is a beautiful vintage. The wines show power and balance, and this zinfandel is certainly no exception. It has an attractive and rich nose of fully ripe raspberries, blackberries, a little bit of plum and fig which evolves into complex flavors of spices like sage, vanilla, black pepper, and nutmeg.

In the mouth the wine shows great weight with mild tannins. Even though it is fully ripe and loaded it does not make the wine heavy. The real beauty of our Mount Veeder location is that our elevation and cooler climate protects the acidity and makes the structure of the wine balanced with its richness. You will like it! The wine has great length on your palate. The French oak is fully integrated and fully contributes to the expression of the flavors and make it the wine feel full and round with a very long finish.

14Potelle Two

The practice of establishing a “second wine” began in the 18th century as way for Bordeaux winemakers to be more selective of the wine going into their estate label. The goal was to increase the quality of the “Grand Vin” (i.e. VGS) and also create a very good second wine, which can typically be enjoyed, younger and costs less.

Since then, a lot of the top chateaux have added a third wine. That strict selection between the lots and the barrels, ensure the very best quality for the Grand Vin and a tremendous quality/value for the second vin.

At VGS, we have done that by having the VGS and the Illegitimate. Now, we are adding Potelle Two which makes our selection process even stricter. And The Illegitimate has become a separate brand.

Potelle Two, the second wine of Potelle, was born from this tradition.

53% of Potelle Two is made from grapes that are extremely exuberant making the bouquet extremely delicate (Cabernet Franc) with lots of extraction (Syrah) and raspberry and spices (Zinfandel). The balance is made of 41% of Cabernet Sauvignon and 6% Petit Verdot both bringing power and strength.

In the mouth the wine has a nice structure, the weight is good, it sits well, it is round and ample but it also presents a nice suppleness that balances the structure and ensure earlier drinkability.  The finish is very long.
